A few more pics, some press and some World Cup record setting!

We are getting closer and closer to Ride Sun Valley! Only a few days away and we are getting amped.

Trails are being built (check out the new photos below), qualified riders are getting ready (Want to know who qualified?), riders far and wide are headed our way (Even the Bellingham Herald is spreading the word) and riders currently competing at the Windham Mountain Bike World Cup are anticipating Ride Sun Valley and the USAC Cross-Country Mountain Bike National Champs.

And the word on the street is that no one is more ready than American rider Aaron Gwin, who is the first American man in more than 10 years to lead in overall points and is currently poised to win the World Cup series. We are not sure he will be joining us at Ride Sun Valley but there is nothing like a little competition and record-setting to get everybody else inspired and ready for Ride Sun Valley!

2nd Annual Idaho Pump Track State Championships

If you are headed to Sun Valley to compete in the USAC Mountain Bike Cross-Country National Championships (or if you are already in town, like the Specialized Crew who we hear has already staked out a campsite south of Ketchum…), why not add another trophy to the collection and compete in the 2nd Annual Idaho Pump Track State Championships!

Even organizer and Sun Valley Trail Crew team member, Julian Tyo, has been around the pump track since its inception in the fall of 2009 when he worked with other volunteers and Ketchum Parks and Recreation to create the unique park.  Then last year, after Tyo had seen several attempts at Pump Track racing in other communities around the West, he decided to start up some racing of our very own on the new Ketchum facility. So last summer, for the inaugural Idaho State Pump Track championships, Tyo and his fellow crew of Pump Track volunteers put on the event in the middle of the summer.

The event was a success with 35 racers ranging in age from three years old to a sprightly 56. Then this past fall, the team orchestrated a four week Pump Track Town series, utilizing four of the tracks five distinct courses. Once the word got out about Ride Sun Valley and the USA MTB Cross-Country Champs in Ketchum, it was only natural that the Idaho Pump Track State Championships go right along with it.

Julian and the crew, who make no money putting on the event (all the entry fee proceeds go to the cash prize pool), are hoping for 70 participants in this year’s races and for a crowd of over 300, compared to last year’s 100 spectators.

With so much going on for next week’s Fest, the Pump Track races are definitely not to miss. And if you feel like racing, hop on your bike and head over to the Ketchum track and participate in an all ages, homegrown event on one of the best pump tracks in the nation.

The event takes place Saturday, with racing from 7-9pm. Come by and check it out. (For more info go to the Events page at Also check out the video of last year’s winning run!

Ketchum’s Bike Culture: Geared and Ready for Ride Sun Valley

Thanks to the bicycle-heralding exhibition at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, it is more than evident that Ketchum is amped for the Ride Sun Valley Festival.

With help from artists and bikemakers like Lisa Anne Auerbach, Margarita Cabrera, Dzine, Katina Huston, Dinh Q. Lê, Ahearne Cycles, Hufnagel Cycles and Schwinn, the exhibition shows bicycles not as vital forms of transport and exercise but also as art. The exhibition, entitled “Geared: The Culture of Bicycles”, will be open at the Ketchum location until July 28th, so when you are in town, stop by and see for yourself!

In the meantime, we have proof of Ketchum’s love of all things two wheeled. Check out the slideshow below which shows portraits of locals and their beloved bikes.

Smith Optics Local Stokers: Where to ride when you aren’t racing.

The sun is shining in Sun Valley and the hardworking and super-stoked Sun Valley Trail Crew is still hard at work on the trails for the USA Cycling Cross-Country National Championships. They are widening trails, removing debris, and working on rock features like the River Run Rocks, the Baldy Bench and the Climb for the Sun. It is sure to be the race of the summer and Ketchum is already buzzing with excitement about the upcoming National Champs, seeing a few Stars and Stripes jerseys around town and the entire Ride Sun Valley Festival.

The week can’t be all business can it? If you are looking for something to do in your down time, need some recreational riding between races, or if you are just coming to town to watch the races and are looking for some cool local rides, definitely do not miss the Smith Optics Local Stokers. These rides will take you places like Red Warrier and Greenhorn Gulch, or to the Edge of the World out Baker Creek and even up the 2,100 vertical feet of Fox Peak.

With support from Mountain Rides, Smith is organizing a bunch of opportunities to check out local mountain bike rides throughout the Wood River Valley with local guides and free transport. Each ride will be leaving from the Sun Valley Visitor Center in Ketchum’s Town Plaza each morning from July 13 to July 16. Free shuttles will be provided when necessary but you need to bring your own fuel and plenty of water as things are really heating up around here. These are rides characteristic to the strenuous single track of Idaho and riders are recommended to be ready for a difficult but fun ride. Get there early because space is limited to whoever gets there first. Check out the schedule at for a full list of rides and all the info.

And to get your taste buds salivating, check out Plum TV’s video of the Greenhorn Gulch ride.

For more information about local rides, one of the best local resources is the Wood River Bicycle Coalition. Their blog updates every day with trail information and advice on where to ride around Sun Valley. Check it out at
